Date: 30th September 2007
Venue: Dolphin Leisure Centre, Haywards Heath
Match 1 vs Brentwood Ladies 1.
Result: Sussex Dolphins lost to Brentwood Ladies 1: 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 12-25)
Sussex Dolphins knew that this would be a tough first game at home against last years third position team. Brentwood 1 brought a large squad of experienced players with some new signings. Sussex started nervously but began to get into the game with some solid hitting from Sarah Wood. Sussex stayed in close contention until Brentwood's big four hitter got to the net. Sussex lost their shape on court attempting to cope with the power of the spiking and Brentwood capitalised on the gaps. Sussex came back fighting in the second set and some strong serving by Vicky Sarsfield and Joey Phillipo-Nevill kept Sussex in contention. However Brentwood's confidence rose and they began to distribute the ball well varying their attack eventually taking the second set
25-21. Sussex, in the third set, lost confidence and heads went down allowing Brentwood to take a very strong early lead. At 10-2 down Sussex failed to get a good pass in to the setter and continued pressure from Brentwood meant the result of the third set was a foregone conclusion. Sussex can take their learnings from this game and will build for future matches.
Sussex Dolphins Player of the match: Victoria Sarsfield
Match 2 vs Dartford
Result: Sussex Dolphins beat Dartford 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19)
Sussex went into the Dartford game with more confidence having seen Dartford go down to Brentwood 3-1 in the second game of the day. The team gelled again and some strong hitting by Vicky Sarsfield and net play by Sophie Fletcher raised the team spirit. Some good pass, set, spike combinations with attacks through reverse, middle and outside allowed Sussex to dominate and take the first set. Sussex started slowly in set two and at one stage were ten points down. A twelve point serving run by Tracy Bateman brought Sussex back into contention and again Sussex capitalised on the pressure put on Dartford. Dartford scrapped well for every point with some excellent cover but Sussex raised their game and took the second set. Coach Jason Lock made team changes for set three but the quality of the pass remained good and some excellent setting allowed Sussex hitters free reign to attack Dartford. Sussex remained strong and consistent and took the third set to win the match.
