Date: 13th October 2007
Venue: Mildenhall, Newmarket
Match 1 vs vs Newmarket .
Result: Sussex Dolphins beat Newmarket: 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-11, 25-12)
Sussex put out a strengthened side for their second round matches. A shaky start in the first set, with some poor serving allowed Newmarket to take the first set. Sussex made too many errors and allowed Newmarket to finish strongly. However the close points position at the end of the first set gave Sussex confidence. The second set went point for point until Sean Wray came to serve and a six point serving run with some solid blocking and passing gave the Sussex the edge they had been looking for. Sussex went from strength to strength in sets three and four and Newmarket collapsed. Some good team work and communication built on set 2's win and some more solid serving, this time from Vlad Sipula and strong hitting from Richard Hemery and Marian Jura gave Sussex a well deserved win.
Player of the match: Richard Hemery
Match 2 vs vs T.H.Lynx
Result: Sussex Dolphins beat T.H.Lynx: 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-21)
Sussex had a closely contested match vs T.H.Lynx. Sussex continued to play in the vein of their first match with some excellent passing but some strong hitting from Lynx beating the Sussex block gave Lynx the set. Sussex raised their game in set two and their gain in confidence showed in their play. The excellent passing gave rise to some very good distribution of the ball from setter Gary Hill utilising all attackers to the maximum. Some innovative passages of play, where Sussex used combination attacks to draw the block, allowed them to find holes in the Lynx defence. This with some pressure serving from John Burlet and successful short attacks from Marian Jura meant Sussex built through the game to take the match.
Player of the match: John Burlet
Squad: M. Jura, V. Sipula, R. Hemery, G. Hill, S. Wray, M. Rogers, J. Burlet. Coach: T. Bateman
