Result: Sussex Dolphins Men lost to RAF Harriers 3-0 (16-25, 23-25, 24-26)
A young Dolphins side made the long trip to RAF Digby near Lincoln to play in the First Round of the EVA Cup. The opponents were the former Division 2 team the RAF Harriers, who, with lots of experience and well known players, seemed a daunting prospect.
The game started as expected with the RAF dominating the scoring, and the first set going their way 25-16.
The second set was a completely different affair. Sussex kept pace with the Harriers thanks to powerful hitting from Vlad Sipula and Rob Pennifold, and excellent defence from Matt Rogers and Stefan Nordt which resulted in several long rallies. The RAF scraped the second set 25-23.
Sussex remained in good form in the third. Sean Wray seemed to be everywhere on court and his setting never far from the mark. This combined with the huge blocking presence of Marian Jura at front court, meant that Sussex had the Harriers worried. As fatigue set in for the Dolphins, the RAF took the lead. A 26-24 set win for the Harriers meant they wrapped up the match 3-0.
With 5 Sussex players unavailable for this fixture, the prospect of the next encounter is an exciting one. The team that played can be proud of their performance and spirit in which they played. Sussex Player of the Match – Sean Wray.
